Galatians 5:16 reads, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”  The flesh and spirit distinction in Scripture is clearly established.  But in defining the “spirit,”  it is a mistake to assume the use of the capital “S” in the translation of the word.  There is no distinction in Greek and since that which is contrasted with “spirit” is flesh, it is my observation that the description is not a reference to the Holy Spirit directly but to the spirit world.  It is the focus on that world that is key to not fulfilling the desires of the flesh.

Verse 17 reads, “The flesh and Spirit are opposed to each other and Romans 8:4-5 reads, “…in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the spirit.”  

Galatians 5:22–23 — The “fruit of the spirit” (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) is the evidence that someone is walking by the spirit.  This isn’t about waiting on the Spirit to speak to us.  It’s a mindset that fixes one’s mind on spiritual things because God, who is spirit,  desires us to be like Him.  Because we wish to honor the One who has done so much for us,  this communication between two spirit enjoins us as one.

Consequently, walking by the spirit is not just about avoiding sin.   It’s about displaying Christlike character.   Galatians 5:25 reads, “If we live by the spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”  The spiritual man follows in rhythm and for all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God (Rom. 8:14).

Again, 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 reads, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom… and we are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”

Transformation is accomplished by the renewing of the mind (cf. Rom. 12:2).  Such transformation starts on the inside rather than focusing on outward behaviors and forms.  It is not focused on appearances or behavioral modifications.  Once our spirits yield to the will of the Holy Spirit of God, fruits will be born (Gal. 5:19-21), love will overshadow selfishness,  and service, bearing one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:1-2) will replace the self-serving carnal mind.

✨ In summary: Walking by the spirit is moment-by-moment surrender, yielding to the will of God in the spiritual world.  This renewal of the mind will produce His fruit, reject the corruption of flesh and spirit, and will lead to one being transformed into Christ’s image.
