[/vc_accordion_tab][/vc_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]The One God and Holy Spirit
We do not have the space to explore every point concerning the Holy Spirit. It would require a book of its own to give it a full treatment. Therefore, we wish to propose a brief introduction that the Holy Spirit is not some impersonal force or power into which one may tap. He is a divine being that shares the same qualities of deity with two other personalities. This can be done without destroying the oneness of God. We will attempt to support this view by the illustration of the unity in marriage. First, Genesis 1:26 has God saying, “Let us make man in our image.” Unity exists if the union produces the same intent, purpose, plan of action, and implementation. In other words, all three act as one. Jesus taught “I and the Father are one………(cf. John 10:22-42).
An example of unity that helps define this unity in three is found in 1 Corinthians 6:12 – 7:5.
One Spirit
Chapter six reads that one joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him (v. 17). The Spirit abides in us just as Jesus abides in us. If one abides in us, all three abide in us. Paul develops the thought that the Spirit is within us. He emphasizes that we have been bought with a price. Thus, “WE ARE NOT OUR OWN” (6:19-20). The thought of slaves expresses this same idea. As bond-servants, we have no rights, privileges, or ownership. This is one identifying mark of a Christian, i.e. they have relinquished all rights because as Galatians 2:20 expresses it, “I have been crucified with Christ.” Therefore, Paul explains, “it is not “I” who lives but Christ who lives in me.”
In addition, if God’s child has denied self and has become one spirit with Him, then our bodies which house that which is within us is also not our own. Paul explains in two ways that our bodies are not ours. First, he explains that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. If the disciple of Christ physically exists, then, their spirit dwells in a body (cf. 2 Cor. 5). Second, if we are “one spirit with Him (6:17),” then the body houses not only our spirit, but the Holy Spirit. That is a spiritual marriage bond. Second, he speaks of our bodies being members of Christ (v. 15). It is unnatural and inconsistent with this union to join a member of Christ (our bodies) to a prostitute.
Here, he introduces the thought of becoming “one flesh” to whomever you join the physical body. To have sex with a woman is to become “one body” or one flesh with her. Paul connects this situation to the inauguration of marriage. In the beginning, it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” God approves and joins this fleshly relationship. Genesis 2:24 explains that two (male and female) become one flesh. It is true that a husband and wife establish a new household and companionship but the relationship is described as being “one flesh.” This union is approved by God and is by design the divine plan to avoid fornication (1 Cor. 6:18, “flee fornication”; 7:1-2, “to avoid…let a man have his own wife…”). In the same way that being one spirit with the Lord implies that “we are not our own” but are designed to glorify God, our fleshly body is not our own, either. Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 7:4 that neither the woman or the man has power or authority over their own body. The thought that is expressed when a woman exclaims, “It’s my body and I’ll decide for myself what I will do with it,” is said to justify withholding sex from her husband or getting an abortion. A child of God would not make this claim because he or she has dedicated their fleshly desires to be satisfied only by their own spouse. Consequently, verse three states that the husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband and verse five adds, “Do not deprive one another.” The very temptation to look elsewhere for this physical union is removed when each respects God’s plan. Each should consider the other before self . Yet, too often, sexual deprivation occurs within an approved marriage over headaches and mood swings. Just remember that neither you, nor your body are yours. Until we understand and apply this principle, there will be division and broken marriages.
This union and fellowship illustrates the unity in the godhead. God is a spirit (cf. John 4:24, Luke 24:39), thus, all three divine persons are spirit. Also, His ways and thoughts are much higher than ours (cf. Isaiah 55:8-9). Since we must not attribute human thought and ways to God, we cannot join that triune Godhead. We are not at a complete disadvantage, however. Unlike the animal kingdom, God has created humans in his image and likeness. Man’s creation in His image relates to that spiritual nature, not fleshly. We also are a spirit living in a body of flesh (physical nature). It is for this reason that we become “one spirit” with Him. That part of our existence that thinks, reasons, and executes the power of choice to develop plans of action relates to this divine nature. It, also, feels emotions of pleasure or displeasure over the outcome of those plans. For example, God is jealous God and, therefore, desires His creation to worship Him, only. Similarly, human beings experience an array of emotions toward an unfaithful spouse.
The thought is that of working harmoniously together, each being fulfilled by serving the needs of the other. In the godhead, there are no big and little persons. What is planned, spoken, or carried out is in perfect harmony and consistency. Unity is being perfectly joined together in the same mind and judgment (cf. 1 Cor 1:10).
